Claire Trevor School of the Arts is preparing for a rollicking production of 9 to 5: The Musical, set to take the stage from Nov. 21-24 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. Based on the 1980s film, this lively musical features songs by country music icon Dolly Parton and a story by original screenwriter Patricia Resnick. It brings audiences a humorous yet potent commentary on gender equality, pay equity, and workplace fairness.

Directed and choreographed by Myrona DeLaney, professor of dance and head of the music theatre area at CTSA, with music direction by Sain Leyva, M.F.A. ’25, 9 to 5: The Musical follows the journey of three women who, dissatisfied with their toxic workplace environment, band together to challenge their domineering and sexist boss, Franklin Hart Jr. Through comedy and camaraderie, they take control of the office and build a fair and respectful environment – one where everyone is valued.

“9 to 5: The Musical is an important story for our time,” said DeLaney. “Too often, the modern workplace is mired in outdated norms. This production is both a tribute to the women who fought for workplace rights and a reminder that we still have work to do.”

DeLaney hopes the story will inspire audiences to reflect on ongoing struggles for gender equality and be a source of encouragement in their own pursuits for change.

With catchy songs, colorful choreography, and a powerful message about empowerment and solidarity, 9 to 5 is an engaging production that resonates across generations. The Department of Drama invites audiences to laugh, reflect, and celebrate the progress made by pioneering women – while recognizing the journey toward workplace equality continues.

There are three evening performances on Nov. 21-23 at 8 p.m., and two matinee performances on Nov. 23-24 at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $10 to $25. A special TalkBack session with the cast and crew will follow the matinee on Nov. 24, offering a unique chance for audience members to engage with the creative team behind the production.
